After Marist, Tom worked for NBC News as an archivist and was promoted to On-Site Coordinator for NBC’s digital transition project, which involved converting all of NBC News’ video prior to 1997 onto state-of-the-art digital composite reels. After completion of the project, Tom decided to work closer to home and landed a job with Publisher’s Circulation Fulfillment. PCF played host to such clients as the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. In his new role as Information Support Services Administrator, Tom was in charge of updating and maintaining subscription files for PCF’s various clients and administering such data to his support staff. However, by November of 1999, Tom accepted a job offer as an Assistant Editor with PR Newswire, the main leader in the electronic delivery of breaking news releases and information directly from companies and institutions around the world. Within six months, Tom received PRN's global editorial performance award and a customer-care nomination from colleagues within the company. He was then promoted to Global News Editor, responsible for handling both domestic and international copy on an immediate basis. Tom left editorial in March of 2002 after accepting a new position as associate producer for PRN's multimedia division. By the Summer of that same year, he was asked to take part in the creation of PRN's newly formed broadcast company, MultiVu, as a Production Manager. In January, 2003 he was promoted to Supervisor of Media Relations and by the end of that same year took on the role of Manager for their Broadcast Distribution division. Tom finally left PRN after 5 years to accept a job as a TV news reporter for WRNN-TV based out of Rye in Westchester, but he worked out of their New York City bureau covering the Manhattan beat and was quickly promoted to senior reporter/fill-in anchor. Citing pressures of the industry, Tom left RNN in August, 2008 to pursue a career in teaching. He has not ruled out plans to one day return to television and work on freelance projects.

From: Marti Giunto (Multimedia Operations) 12/20/2000 To: Wes Simpson (Global Editorial Director) Subject: Excellent Service Dear Wes, I have never received such great service from any global editor as I have from Tom Schwab. He is smart, helpful, professional, (I can go on and on). But, the best of all is his proactiveness and follow-through. He is an asset to your team.

From: Kelly Bober (Account Executive) 04/19/2000 To: Wes Simpson (Global Editorial Director) Subject: Kudos to Tom! Dear Wes, I talked to John Harkolla at Retrieval Dynamics and he wanted to make sure that I passed along the message that Tom was absolutely wonderful to work with. He really appreciated all of the service he got and he wanted me to make sure I passed on the message. John had some trouble with his PRN Direct; the press release came through garbled, but Tom helped him out and got the situation under control. Thank you Tom for your services to our client here in Florida. Sincerely, |

As mentioned earlier, his dreams of television reporting were first rewarded at Marist College when he was appointed news director for MCTV, Marist College Television. In the photo below, Tom is seen at an MCTV News' story meeting where he and his management team, comprised of producers and assignment editors, develop new ideas for the next show. It was Tom’s responsibility to see that such projects and ideas were executed in an accurate and timely manner as to meet the deadline pressures of television news.

Tom started developing his news talent long before his success in college and at PR Newswire. The year was 1989 and although he was only in 7th grade, Tom had established a basement broadcasting facility and was the author of an elaborately produced news program, TRN News. Along with his friend Ryan France, Tom, at age 12, was chasing down interviews, video taping stories, writing scripts and assembling newscasts. As seen below, this was the subject of an article published by a local New Jersey newspaper in 1990.

One of Tom’s finest accomplishments was when he received a prestigious fellowship from the International Radio and Television Society in the summer of 1998. He was up against more than one thousand applicants from around the country. The foundation ultimately picks 20 students and Tom became the first Marist College student ever to be chosen. The nine-week program introduces students who have a deep interest in all facets of television and radio to a world of media interaction. Not only does the program place the winning candidate at an internship of his/her choice in New York City, but the recipient gets to mingle with media moguls, celebrities, and experts within their respective fields of study. By this point, Tom was accustomed to internships having completed four of them prior to receiving the fellowship. His internship through IRTS was with New York One; there, he was fortunate to have worked one-on-one with NY1’s very own Paul Messina, a well-known and respected feature reporter. During his fellowship with IRTS, Tom was invited to have a private lunch with Chris Bogart, Time Warner’s Vice President & Deputy General Counsel. Plus, Tom had the privilege of attending an award ceremony honoring Viacom President Sumner Redstone at the Waldorf Astoria. At the event, Tom met dozens of celebrities, including Judge Judy Scheindlin, ER actress Gloria Reuben, and heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield to name a few. The picture seen below is the cover of IRTS’ fellowship application, featuring Tom sandwiched between Sister Sister stars Tia and Tamara Mowry.

Shortly before he graduated, the Circle, Marist College’s newspaper, did an article on Tom and his life with news. The article - seen below - details some of Tom's accomplishments and explores his overwhelming drive and ambition to succeed in his chosen career.

Getting to Know: By Katrina Fuchsenberger |
For the last 12 years, Tom has been
interested in pursuing a career in television news and, in doing so, has developed
personal and invaluable contacts with numerous professionals within the field, including
Matt Lauer, Jane Hanson, and Mario Cuomo to name a few. One of Tom's closest relationships
is with WNBC-TV's Chuck Scarborough who he met when he was 12.
For years, Scarborough coached him about the news business and
helped him eventually get a job at NBC News.
Since then, Tom was the first Marist student to receive a fellowship from the
International Radio and Television Society where he had the opportunity to intern at New
York 1. More recently, he's interned at WNBC, RNN, WPDH radio, and News Center 6 in
Wappingers Falls.
At Marist, Tom served as news director for the college television
station pioneering major advancements in the restructuring of the news department. He was
also involved with writing for the Circle as well as producer and host of a radio
news show on WMCR.
He believes in the importance of accurate reporting and balanced
journalism and he says he's more than willing to lend advice to anyone who is curious
about the industry.
